Pascal: Doing Nothing, Going Nowhere

All men’s miseries derive from not being able to sit in a quiet room alone
~ Blaise Pascal, quoted in the blog zenhabits

All human troubles arise from an inability to stay where we were born
~ Blaise Pascal, quoted by Jay Griffiths in her book Pip Pip (A Sideways Look at Time)

I guess Pascal wrote these after he had given up his brilliant early career as a mathematician. The first reminds me of Confucius, but doesn’t he go too far in the second?
