Yogic mudras in Christian imagery

Christ and the Apostles are often depicted with their hands in yogic mudras
Christ Pantokrator
An interesting article in the online Christian Yoga Magazine describes some of these mudras:

  • Prithvi Mudra: tip of the ring finger touching the tip of the thumb. Activates the root chakra. This hand position is still used for blessing (bendiction) within the Christian churches; the entry for Blessing on Wikpedia suggests that the hands form the letters IC XC
  • Pran Mudra: tips of the last two fingers touching the tip of the thumb. This is the sword mudra in tai chi sword
  • anjali mudra – hands held together in prayer position in front of the at the heart
